Small restaurants

There wasn’t really a developed tourist infrastructure in Myanmar yet (fortunately). But there were plenty of small restaurants and eateries, certainly in the major towns. This meant we could go wherever we wanted without having to worry about where we could eat that evening.

Favourite Restaurant

In Yangon, we had our favourite restaurant, known locally as ‘Shwe Ba’, named after a well-known actor who used to dine there often. It was quite a long walk from our guesthouse and the streets were largely unlit. But we loved it there. What’s more, it was always busy, so there was a high turnover, which in turn meant fresh food. You could choose from a wide variety of dishes. We ordered “a bit of everything” and had it served with white rice. And because Myanmar is a Buddhist rather than an Islamic country, the delicious locally brewed beer was readily available. It went very well with the “Burmese Rice Plate”.

On the photo above, the restaurant staff are posing for us at the end of the evening; the lady on the right looks like the owner.

Selfie in Restaurant

Just as Brigitte and I were about to take a selfie, a little girl was plonked onto the stool. The self-timer was already running. And Brigitte had little choice but to catch the child, otherwise she would have tumbled off the stool. Apparently, children are very important in Burmese society.
