The Sahara, the largest desert on earth, is an impressive and beautiful region. Between 1981 and 1986, I travelled through the Sahara three times and also undertook an interesting journey through the neighbouring Atlas Mountains in Morocco. I made two of those trips with friends and two with my partner. At that time, the Sahara was one of the last unspoilt areas in the world. And we had the feeling that any one of those trips could well be our last.
It always took an enormous preparation to organize a Sahara crossing. One has to plan the itinerary, sort out a whole host of formalities, prepare the car and organize the logistic part of the expedition. That took a lot of time and it also involved a considerable travel budget. But I’m very happy that we used the possibility to travel trough the Sahara back then!
Unfortunately, today it is impossible to travel through the Sahara safely, because of the political situation. And you have never seen the Sahara really, because there is so much to discover and to learn about. But I’m still very happy that we were able to cross it three times. And I would like to share that experience with everybody who is interested in it. Below you can find the relevant links.
